What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect major people, conflicts, policies, and groups to the presidencies of Houston, Lamar, and Jones. They explain how each shaped security, expansion, diplomacy, slavery, Native relations, and annexation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students place key examples under the correct president and explain their significance. They compare Houston’s diplomacy, Lamar’s expansion policies, and Jones’s role in annexation using accurate evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often mix up Houston’s diplomacy with Lamar’s military expansion. They may treat racial and ethnic groups as having one shared view or overlook the roles of Tejanos, Black Texans, and Native peoples.
How to Assess It
- Give students six names or events to match with Houston, Lamar, or Jones. Have them choose two and write one sentence explaining each one’s significance.
