The Standard
- 7.18
- Culture. The student understands the concept of diversity within unity in Texas. The student is expected to:
identify contributions to the arts by Texans such as Roy Bedichek, Diane Gonzales Bertrand, J. Frank Dobie, Scott Joplin, Elisabet Ney, Amado Peña Jr., Walter Prescott Webb, and Horton Foote.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect each Texan to an art form or body of work. They distinguish ragtime, sculpture, visual art, drama, fiction, folklore, nature writing, and historical writing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can correctly match all eight people to their contributions. The student can use a title, image, excerpt, or fact to explain each match.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may mix up Scott Joplin's ragtime music, Elisabet Ney's sculpture, Amado Peña Jr.'s visual art, and Horton Foote's plays. They may group Bedichek, Bertrand, Dobie, and Webb simply as writers without distinguishing their types of writing. They may also assume every person was born in Texas.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket with eight names and eight shuffled contributions. Students match all eight, then add one supporting title, image, or fact.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs name and contribution cards, then have them build a tabletop gallery with one matching artifact image per person.
Ask students: Which Texan changed how people see or hear Texas most, and what evidence from one work supports your choice?
Play a four-corner game labeled literature, music, visual art, and drama, reading names or works for students to classify.
Show a Texas museum, library, theater, or music venue website, then ask students to locate one featured artist's lasting influence.
