What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify familiar patriotic customs and celebrations, such as saying the Pledge, displaying the flag, and celebrating Independence Day. They explain how people can show pride in different ways and honor shared freedoms.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can name a custom or celebration and describe what people do. The student can use a because statement to connect it to freedom or individual choice.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think everyone must celebrate in the same way, or that freedom means doing anything without rules. They may name a symbol, such as the flag, without explaining what people’s actions show.

How to Assess It

Show a picture of an Independence Day parade and ask, “What are people doing, and how does it show freedom or individual choice?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs picture cards of parades, flags, the Pledge, fireworks, and picnics, then sort them under freedom, individual choice, or both.

  2. Ask students to draw two families celebrating Independence Day differently and finish, “Freedom lets people choose to ____.”

  3. Play a matching game where students pair a patriotic custom card with a meaning card, then explain the match using because.

  4. Take a school walk to find flags or patriotic displays, then discuss what choices people made when creating them.
