What Students Need to Do: Students judge whether a test or solution meets its stated goal. They use data to identify strengths, weaknesses, sources of error, and useful changes.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students compare results with clear criteria and cite specific data. They explain whether a test was fair or a solution worked, then suggest a realistic improvement.
Common Misconceptions: Students may choose the design they like best instead of using evidence. They may confuse mistakes with variables, ignore repeated trials, or suggest changes unrelated to the goal.
How to Assess It: Show a plant growth test where each plant receives different light and water amounts. Ask students to identify one problem and propose one change that makes the test fairer.

Lesson moves

Build and test paper bridges, record the load each holds, then revise one feature based on the results.
Ask students to write which cup insulation design worked best and support the claim with temperature data.
Give teams experiment cards to sort into fair test, flawed test, or unclear, then require one reason for each choice.
Compare two reusable lunch containers using cost, durability, capacity, and leak test results, then recommend one for the school cafeteria.
