What Students Need to Do: Students sort living things, water, gases, rocks, and landforms into the correct Earth system. They explain what makes each system different.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly classify examples such as trees, lakes, air, soil, and mountains. They can justify each choice using matter or features found in that system.
Common Misconceptions: Students may place only animals in the biosphere or only oceans in the hydrosphere. They may confuse soil with living matter or treat clouds as gases rather than water droplets.
How to Assess It: Give an exit ticket listing grass, groundwater, oxygen, and granite. Students name the system for each and explain one choice.

Lesson moves

Give groups picture cards of organisms, water, gases, rocks, and landforms to sort under four labeled hoops.
Show a schoolyard photo and ask students to identify one visible component from each Earth system.
Play four corners by reading examples such as glacier, hawk, nitrogen, and canyon while students move to the matching labeled corner.
Use a local park map to label its plants, ponds, air, soil, and rock features by Earth system.
