Students move between a situation, a written description, a table, a graph, and an equation. They identify whether the output is a multiple of the input or the input plus a fixed amount.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can decide whether a situation uses equal multiplication or starts with a fixed amount and adds one each time. Their table, graph, equation, and verbal description show the same relationship.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse multiplying by a constant with adding a fixed amount. They may graph a multiplicative relationship with a nonzero starting point, or treat the added value as the rate.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Represent “A plant starts at 5 centimeters and grows 1 centimeter each week” with words, a table, a graph, and an equation.
