- Students decide which tool and strategy best fit a problem. They use the choice to solve, then explain why it was useful and reasonable.

- Students independently choose an efficient tool or method for different problems. They solve accurately, explain why the choice fits, and use another method to check when needed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a calculator for every problem or assume manipulatives are only for students who struggle. They may confuse estimation with guessing or use mental math when written work would be clearer.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “A school buys 48 boxes with 24 pencils in each box. Solve, name your tool or strategy, and explain your choice.”
