What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students place two, three, or four flat shape pieces together to match a given outline. They rearrange the pieces to find another solution when one exists.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can select, turn, and place pieces to cover a target exactly without gaps or overlaps. The student can build a second valid arrangement and explain what changed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may leave gaps or overlap pieces and still call the target complete. They may think turning a piece changes its shape. Some count rotating the whole design as a different solution.
How to Assess It
- Give students a pattern-block hexagon outline and assorted blocks. Ask them to fill it twice using two to four blocks, then draw both solutions.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs pattern blocks and target mats; students fill each outline with two to four pieces, then rebuild it another way.
Ask, "How are your two designs alike and different?" and have students name the pieces that moved or changed position.
Play Shape Builder: draw a target card, choose two to four foam shapes, and earn a point for each exact match.
Show a quilt-square photo, then have students recreate one section with paper triangles and rectangles in two different arrangements.
