What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students notice the different ways a digital text shares information, such as words, pictures, sound, animation, and buttons. They tell what each feature does for the reader.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can point to words, pictures, audio, animation, or buttons in an e-book or webpage. The student can explain how one feature adds information or helps the reader move through the text.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call everything on a screen a video. They may name pictures or sound without explaining how each feature helps, or mistake ads and links for story content.
How to Assess It
- Show one page from an e-book. Ask each student to point to two features and explain how one helps the reader.

Give pairs printed e-book screenshots and feature cards, then have them match words, pictures, sound icons, animation, and navigation buttons.
Show a digital story page and ask, "What do you learn from the picture or sound that the words do not tell?"
Play Feature Hunt by displaying digital pages while students earn a point for correctly finding and naming a requested feature.
