What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students tell what a short informational text is mostly about. With adult prompts, they point to a fact or picture that supports their answer.
What Mastery Looks Like
- After a short read-aloud, the student states the main topic in simple words. With a prompt, the student identifies a fact or picture that supports it.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name one interesting detail instead of the big idea. They may guess from the cover without using facts or pictures from the text.
How to Assess It
- Read a short animal paragraph aloud, then ask, “What is this mostly about? Show me one fact or picture that helped you.”

Ways to Teach It
Read a short nonfiction book, then have students place picture and fact cards under a matching main idea card.
Ask, “What was the book mostly about, and which fact helped you know?” Record student answers on a class chart.
Play Main Idea Match by having students pair topic cards with supporting picture cards and explain each match.
Examine a school lunch menu and identify its main purpose, then point out two details that support that idea.
