What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students say a word slowly, separate its sounds, and write a letter or taught letter pattern for each sound. They use familiar patterns to spell new words.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students independently spell familiar words and new regular words with taught letter patterns. They reread their spelling and notice when a sound is missing or out of order.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may write only the first and last sounds, leaving out the middle vowel. They may use letter names instead of sounds or write sounds in the wrong order.
How to Assess It
- Dictate three words using taught patterns, such as map, sit, and chop. Have students say each word slowly, write it, and circle the middle spelling.

Ways to Teach It
Use letter tiles to build map, change it to mop, then change mop to top, saying each sound after every move.
Ask, “How would you spell sun?” Have students explain which letter they chose for each sound.
Play Picture Card Spell: students draw a card, name the picture, spell it on a whiteboard, and check each sound with a partner.
Students label classroom objects such as rug, bin, clock, and shelf, using the sound patterns they know.
