What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students listen for each sound in a word and write the letter or letter team that represents it. They use familiar patterns, including short vowels and digraphs, when spelling.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can segment a spoken one-syllable word and spell it with a taught pattern. The student can identify which letters represent each sound and apply the same pattern to a new word.

Common Misconceptions

Students may write one letter for a two-letter spelling, such as s for sh, or confuse short vowel sounds. They may omit middle or final sounds, reverse sounds, or rely on letter names instead of spoken sounds.

How to Assess It

Say the words ship, chat, and frog. Students write each word and draw a dot under each sound-spelling part.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students letter tiles and picture cards, then have them build, read, and write words such as ship, chat, and frog.

  2. Ask, "How would you spell chop, and what known word or pattern helps you?" Students explain, then write their answer.

  3. Play Pattern Sort: students draw word cards, read each word, and place it under headings such as short a, sh, or ch.

  4. Have students write labels for classroom objects or a pretend grocery list, then circle sound patterns they used.
