What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students recognize common words in print and say them quickly without sounding out each part. They build a reliable bank of at least 25 words from the class list.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student reads 25 or more selected words quickly and correctly, both alone and in simple sentences. The student recognizes the words in different books, fonts, and classroom materials.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess from the picture or first letter instead of reading the whole word. They may confuse similar words, such as “was” and “saw,” or read words only in memorized list order.
How to Assess It
- Show each student 10 shuffled word cards from the class list. Record which words the student reads correctly within three seconds, then repeat with remaining words later.

Ways to Teach It
Give students letter tiles to build five focus words, mix the tiles, rebuild each word, and read it aloud.
Display a short morning message and ask, “Which words can you read right away, and how did you recognize them?”
Play word-card bingo with nine familiar words, calling each word without showing it and having students read completed rows back.
Take a classroom label walk, and have students point out familiar words on signs, schedules, cubbies, and posted directions.
