What Students Need to Do
- Students choose a genre that fits a specific topic, purpose, and audience. They gather and organize ideas through discussion, background reading, and connections to personal interests before drafting.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a topic, purpose, and audience, a student names a fitting genre and explains the choice. The student creates a usable plan with focused ideas gathered from discussion, reading, or personal experience.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a favorite genre without considering the audience or purpose. They may confuse the topic with the purpose, or begin drafting before gathering and organizing ideas.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “You want the principal to change a school rule. Name the best genre, explain your choice, and list three planning steps.”

Ways to Teach It
Give groups topic, purpose, audience, and genre cards; have them build matching sets and defend each match with one reason.
Ask students to discuss how their plan would change if the same school issue were addressed to friends, parents, or the principal.
Play Genre Match: teams draw a scenario card, choose the best genre, and earn a point by naming a useful planning strategy.
