What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students write about two or more sources and show they understand each one. They compare ideas, details, or perspectives and use evidence from sources in the same or different genres.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students make an accurate comparison and support it with relevant evidence from each source. They explain how the evidence shows a similarity or difference in ideas, details, or perspective.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may summarize each source separately instead of comparing them. They may name a similarity or difference without using evidence, or compare surface features such as length rather than ideas, perspectives, or details.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short article and poem about the same event. Ask them to write one paragraph explaining one meaningful similarity and one difference, using evidence from both texts.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups a printed article and poem on one event, then have them sort detail cards into shared, article-only, and poem-only columns.
Ask students to discuss which source gives a clearer view of the topic, then write a claim supported by evidence from both sources.
Run an evidence-match relay where teams pair claim cards with quotations from two texts and explain each match.
Students compare a product advertisement with a customer review, then write which source is more useful and support the choice with evidence.
