What Students Need to Do
- Students anticipate what may happen or appear next by using clues from the text's design, genre, and organization. They check their ideas while reading and revise them when new details point elsewhere.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students make a reasonable prediction and support it with details such as headings, plot patterns, or text organization. As they read, they explain why new evidence confirms or changes their thinking.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often make guesses from personal experience without pointing to a clue. They may treat an early prediction as fixed. Some confuse a summary of events with a prediction about what comes next.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short passage with a title, subheadings, and an unresolved ending. Ask them to write one prediction, cite two clues, and explain whether they would keep or revise it.
