What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read longer words in which a consonant sound changes after an ending is added. They connect each longer word to its base word and use that relationship to decode and spell it.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately read pairs such as create and creation or magic and magician. They identify the shared base and explain that the consonant sound changes when an ending is added.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may keep the base word's consonant sound, saying the t or hard c sound in the longer word. They may also spell the changed sound with sh instead of keeping the base spelling.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to read create, creation, magic, and magician aloud. Have them underline the shared base and circle the consonant whose sound changes.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups word cards such as act, action, magic, and magician to match, read aloud, and mark the changing consonant sound.
Ask students to explain in writing why creation is related to create even though the final consonant sounds different.
Play a partner game where one student flips a base word card and the other reads its related longer word correctly.
Have students search a school notice or news article for words ending in tion or cian, then find and read their base words.
