- Students build and edit sentences so each one expresses a complete thought. They connect related thoughts correctly and make each verb match its subject.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students write simple and compound sentences with clear subjects and predicates. They match subjects with verbs and revise fragments, run-ons, and comma splices correctly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may mistake a long sentence for a run-on or assume every short group of words is complete. They may join two complete thoughts with only a comma. They also may choose a verb that agrees with the nearest noun instead of the subject.
How to Assess It
- Give students four sentences containing a fragment, a run-on, a comma splice, and a subject-verb agreement error. Ask them to label and correct each one.

Give pairs sentence strips to sort into complete sentences, fragments, run-ons, and comma splices, then have them repair each incorrect strip.
Ask students to explain which revision best fixes a comma splice and support their choice with a sentence rule.
