What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students combine two subjects or two actions in one sentence using a joining word such as “and,” “or,” or “but.” They reread drafts and fix missing or incorrect joining words.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student writes sentences such as “Mia and Luis read” and “Mia reads and writes.” The student can find and correct missing or incorrect joining words in a draft.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may write an incomplete pairing, such as “Lena and sings” or “runs and the dog.” They may also repeat the subject instead of joining two actions under one subject.
How to Assess It
- Give students: “The rabbit hops. The rabbit digs.” Ask them to combine the ideas, circle the joining word, and underline both actions.
