What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find and correct missing capitals in dates and friendly letters. They capitalize names of months and weekdays, plus the first word in a greeting and closing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student correctly edits examples such as Monday, October, Dear Grandma, and Your friend. The student can explain each change and avoids capitalizing words such as today or winter.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may write monday or october with lowercase letters. They may capitalize every word in a closing, such as Your Friend, or capitalize seasons such as winter. They may also leave dear or sincerely lowercase.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: Edit and rewrite, “dear Sam, I will visit on tuesday, march 8. your friend, Ana.” Circle each capital you changed.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs word cards with dates, greetings, and closings, then have them fix the capitals and sort the cards by use.
Ask students to write a short letter inviting a classmate to an event, including a weekday, month, greeting, and closing.
Run a capitalization relay where teams correct sentence strips containing lowercase months, weekdays, greetings, and closings.
