What Students Need to Do: Students find nouns in their own drafts and check whether each names one or more people, places, animals, or things. They correct plural forms and capitalize specific names.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly use one noun or more than one noun in a sentence. They capitalize names and specific places, then fix noun errors when editing a draft.
Common Misconceptions: Students may add an apostrophe when making a noun plural, such as “cat’s.” They may also capitalize every noun or forget capitals in names and places.
How to Assess It: Give students: “maria has two dog.” Ask them to rewrite it correctly and label each noun as singular or plural, common or proper.

Lesson moves

Give pairs noun cards to sort into one, more than one, general name, and specific name groups.
Ask students to write two sentences about a pet, using one general noun and one specific name.
