Key Idea K.9

People have economic needs and wants. Goods and services can satisfy people’s wants. Scarcity is the condition of not being able to have all of the goods and services that a person wants or needs.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students sort examples into goods and services. They explain that a good is an object people use, while a service is work someone does for others.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly identify familiar goods, such as food or clothing, and services, such as haircuts or bus rides. They give a simple reason for each choice.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call every purchase a good, including a haircut or car wash. They may also confuse the worker, such as a doctor, with the service the worker provides.
How to Assess It: Show pictures of a backpack, a haircut, a sandwich, and a bus ride. Ask students to label each good or service and explain one answer.

Lesson moves

Ways to Teach It

Set up a classroom store with toy objects and service cards, then have students sort each purchase into goods or services.
Ask, “What is one good and one service your family used this week?” and record answers in two columns.
Play Goods or Services Corners by naming examples while students move to the matching side of the room.
Study a grocery store receipt and a car wash sign, then discuss what customers receive in each place.
