What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen to a story, memory, or song connected to the past. They retell the main parts and name the lesson, custom, belief, or event it shares.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can retell events in order using key details. The student can explain the message and point to a part that supports the answer.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse the message with their favorite part. They may list small details instead of retelling main events, or assume every legend happened exactly as told.
How to Assess It
- Read The Lion and the Mouse. Have students draw the beginning, middle, and end, then complete: “This story teaches us ____.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs puppets and picture cards to sequence and retell The Lion and the Mouse, then choose a matching lesson card.
Ask, “What does this story teach people to do or remember?” Students answer with one detail from the story.
Play Match the Message by pairing short story cards with picture cards showing kindness, courage, honesty, traditions, or past events.
Play a recorded family or community memory, then have students draw the tradition or event the speaker wants others to remember.
