What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students put events in order and describe when they happened. They use time words such as first, next, yesterday, today, before, and after.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can sequence three or more events and retell them with accurate time words. The student can distinguish past, present, and future events.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse yesterday and tomorrow or use before and after in reverse. They may think long ago means yesterday or change verb tense while retelling.
How to Assess It
- Give students three picture cards showing a child planting, watering, and picking a flower. Ask them to order the cards and retell using first, next, and last.

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs arrange picture cards from a familiar routine, then retell the sequence using first, next, last, before, and after.
Ask, "What did you do yesterday, what are you doing today, and what will you do tomorrow?" Record three responses.
Play Time Word Charades by showing a word card, such as morning or night, while students act out a matching activity.
Study the class calendar and name one event from last week, one happening today, and one planned for next week.
