Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students name jobs they can do at home or in the classroom. They carry out a job that helps keep the group safe, organized, or cared for.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students complete a classroom duty without repeated reminders. They explain who the job helps and how it supports the group.
Common Misconceptions: Students may see classroom jobs as rewards rather than responsibilities. They may also think only adults can keep a group safe or that finishing their own work is enough.
How to Assess It: Ask each student to draw one classroom job and finish the sentence, “This job helps our class because _____.”

Lesson moves

Give pairs job cards, such as line leader or library helper, then have them practice each duty using classroom materials.
Ask, “What could happen if nobody cleaned the block center?” and record students’ cause-and-effect responses.
Play a job-matching game where students match picture cards of classroom problems with the helper duty that solves each one.
Create a home responsibility chart where students draw one duty they perform and identify the family member it helps.
