Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students name things every child should have so they can be safe, healthy, and ready to learn. They recognize that children deserve care and protection from harm or unfair treatment.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can sort examples into needs, protections, and wants. The student can explain who to ask for help at home, school, or in the community.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call favorite toys or treats rights because they want them. They may think protections must be earned. They may see bullying as only hitting and miss exclusion or cruel words.
How to Assess It: Show pictures of a child eating lunch, choosing a new toy, and telling an adult about bullying. Ask students to circle the two showing a need or protection and explain one choice.

Lesson moves

Give pairs picture cards showing meals, homes, classrooms, toys, and unsafe behavior, then have them sort the cards into needs and wants.
Ask, “What should every child have to be safe, healthy, and able to learn?” Students draw one answer and add a label.
Play Rights Charades: students act out learning, getting care, or seeking help, while classmates name the protection shown.
Study the school lunch, nurse, counselor, and safety rules, then match each service to the need it helps meet.
