Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students name common American symbols and identify the stars and stripes on the flag. They tell when selected national holidays are observed and give a simple reason for each celebration. They practice the Pledge, patriotic songs, and respectful flag behavior.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student identifies the Liberty Bell, bald eagle, stars, and stripes from pictures. The student matches several holidays with when and why they are observed. The student explains respectful flag behavior and identifies the Pledge and familiar patriotic songs when heard.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think every holiday is simply a day off, or mix up what Labor Day, Presidents’ Day, and Independence Day remember. They may say the 50 stars represent people or that the 13 stripes represent today’s states. They may recognize a song or symbol but not explain why communities use it.
How to Assess It: Show pictures of the flag, Liberty Bell, bald eagle, and three holidays. Ask each student to name two symbols, identify stars and stripes, then choose one holiday and tell when and why it is observed.

Lesson moves

Give pairs paper stars, red and white strips, and blue rectangles to build a flag, label its parts, and practice careful handling.
Show one holiday photo and ask, “What are people doing, what might they remember, and why does the community celebrate?”
Play a matching game with symbol pictures, holiday names, dates or seasons, and simple purpose cards.
Mark national holidays on the class calendar, then connect each date to school closings, local events, flags, songs, or ceremonies.
