What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare family routines, traditions, and ways of living. They name similarities and differences while using respectful words and avoiding guesses about people.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can describe one way two families are alike and one way they differ. The student treats each difference as a normal part of family life.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every family looks or acts like their own. They may assume appearance reveals someone’s culture, or describe unfamiliar customs as strange or wrong.
How to Assess It
- Show two illustrated family scenes. Ask students to name one similarity, one difference, and one respectful question they could ask each family.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs family photo cards with captions; students sort details into alike and different groups, then explain one choice.
Read The Name Jar, then ask, "How are the children alike, and what makes each child special?"
Play a matching game with family routine cards; students match shared needs, then name different ways families meet each need.
Send home a family tradition page; children draw one routine or celebration, then compare pages respectfully during a class gallery walk.
