What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students name a birthday or another special day their family observes. They describe what people do, eat, wear, say, or share and tell why it matters to them.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can give two clear details about a family tradition and explain who takes part. The student can notice that families may mark special days differently without ranking them.
Common Misconceptions
- Some students may think every family celebrates birthdays or that one way is normal. They may overlook small traditions such as a song, meal, prayer, story, or visit.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Draw your family marking a special day. Label or tell two things your family does and why one matters to you.
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Have students build a celebration scene with paper figures, then point to each figure and explain what family members are doing.
Prompt: Draw a special day in your family and finish, "My family marks this day by..."
Play Tradition Match: students pair picture cards showing food, music, clothing, or activities, then explain why several cards may fit one family.
Ask students to interview a caregiver about one special day tradition and bring back a drawing or dictated sentence.
