Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students name traits about themselves, including gender, race or ethnicity, home language, interests, and family traditions. They compare themselves with classmates and describe similarities and differences respectfully.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can name one way they are like a classmate and one way they are different. The student uses accurate words and avoids judging either trait as better.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think different means better or worse. They may guess a classmate's race, ethnicity, gender, or home language from appearance. Some notice only visible traits and miss shared interests or traditions.
How to Assess It: Ask students to draw themselves and a classmate, then complete: We both ____. I ____, while my classmate ____.

Lesson moves

Have students make paper identity flowers with petals showing a language, family tradition, favorite activity, and one physical feature they choose.
Discuss the prompt, How can two classmates be alike and different at the same time, and record examples on a T-chart.
Play Pair Compare: partners draw two child profile cards, then name one similarity and one difference.
Create a class portrait wall, then invite families to add a note about a home language, tradition, or shared interest.
