TRANSFORMATION OF WESTERN EUROPE AND RUSSIA: Western Europe and Russia transformed politically, economically, and culturally ca. 1400–1750. This transformation included state building, conflicts, shifts in power and authority, and new ways of understanding their world.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students explain how Galileo used observation and experiment, and how Newton used mathematics to describe motion and gravity. They connect these methods to changing views of knowledge and authority.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can use a telescope observation, motion experiment, or scientific law as evidence of a new approach to knowledge. They can explain why these ideas caused conflict or debate.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think Galileo invented heliocentrism or that Newton first noticed gravity. They may also treat the period as a simple battle between science and religion that changed beliefs immediately.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Choose Galileo or Newton, name one idea or method, and explain in two sentences how it questioned an accepted belief or authority.

Lesson moves

Ways to Teach It

Roll balls down ramps, record travel times, and use the results to discuss how repeated measurements can test claims about motion.
Discuss or write: When reliable evidence conflicts with a respected authority, which should people trust, and why?
Sort cards labeled observation, experiment, mathematics, ancient text, and religious teaching into evidence sources, then defend each placement.
Use a phone motion sensor or weather forecast model to identify how modern tools still rely on measurement and mathematical laws.
