What Students Need to Do
- Trace how paper, printing, navigational tools, mathematics, and medical knowledge reached Europe through trade, translation, and scholarship. Explain how scholars in Islamic caliphates preserved, developed, and shared knowledge. Connect Greco-Roman learning and Machiavelli’s political ideas to changing European views.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can use a map or source to explain where an idea developed, how it moved, and how Europeans used it. They can compare medieval and Renaissance views and explain Machiavelli’s approach to political power.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may describe the Renaissance as a sudden, entirely European development. They may claim Islamic scholars only copied older works, ignoring their research and additions. They may also confuse humanism with rejecting religion or read Machiavelli as simply praising cruelty.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Choose paper, the astrolabe, algebra, or a medical text. In four sentences, trace its movement or development, identify the Islamic caliphates’ role, and explain one European effect.
