What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students identify major achievements of the Aztec, Inca, and Songhai empires. They explain how geography, trade, government, and belief shaped those achievements.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students accurately connect examples such as chinampas, Inca roads, quipu, Timbuktu scholarship, and trans-Saharan trade to the correct empire. They use evidence to explain each achievement's purpose and lasting influence.
Common Misconceptions: Students may mix up the regions, technologies, and cultures of the three empires. They may assume societies without alphabetic writing had no records, or that conquest erased all cultural contributions.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Choose one empire, name one achievement, and explain what problem it solved or how it influenced later societies.

Sort artifact cards for chinampas, Inca roads, quipu, and Timbuktu manuscripts, then label each achievement, empire, and purpose.
Write a paragraph answering: Which empire developed the most effective response to its environment, and what evidence supports your claim?
Play an evidence match game connecting achievement cards to the Aztec, Inca, or Songhai empire and explaining each match.
Map modern Mexico, the Andes, and West Africa, then identify one cultural or technological influence still visible in each region.
