What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students explain how beliefs about spirits, ancestors, and natural forces shaped rituals, farming, social roles, and public life. They connect Aztec and Inca religious practices to rulers’ claims of authority.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can use an artifact, image, or written source to connect nature, belief, and social organization. They can compare Aztec, Inca, and African examples while recognizing differences among societies.
Common Misconceptions: Students may reduce animism to simply worshipping objects or nature. They may assume all African and American societies shared one religion, or view Aztec religion only through human sacrifice.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Choose the Aztec or Inca Empire. In three sentences, name one nature-related belief, describe a ritual, and explain how it supported political power.

Ways to Teach It

Give pairs cards on Tlaloc, Inti, and Benin’s Olokun, then have them connect each deity to nature, ritual, and authority using string.
Prompt a quickwrite: When does a ruler’s religious role become political power? Use one Aztec and one Inca example.
Run a card relay where teams sort evidence under nature, belief, or political power, then defend any card that fits two columns.
Show a presidential inauguration clip, then compare its symbols of authority with an Aztec or Inca state ritual while noting historical differences.
