Key Idea 9.7

THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE AND THE MING DYNASTY PRE-1600: Islam, Neo-Confucianism, and Christianity each influenced the development of regions and shaped key centers of power in the world between 1368 and 1683. The Ottoman Empire and the Ming Dynasty were two powerful states, each with a view of itself and its place in the world.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students map Muslim, Christian, and Neo-Confucian regions around 1400. They also map the Ottoman Empire and Ming Dynasty at their peaks, then compare territory, cities, trade routes, and influence.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students accurately place each realm and empire on an outline map. They make a supported comparison of geographic reach and power without treating belief regions as fixed political borders.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat belief regions as unified countries with exact borders. They may assume the largest territory was automatically the strongest, or that each region followed only one belief system.
How to Assess It: Give students a blank Eurasia map and ask them to label the three belief regions, Ottoman Empire, and Ming Dynasty. Have them write one evidence-based comparison of power.

Ways to Teach It

Give pairs outline maps, colored pencils, and boundary clues to shade each belief region and empire, then add major cities and trade routes.
Ask students to write: Which realm appeared most powerful around 1400, and what map evidence supports your claim?
Run a map card sort where teams place labeled cards for regions, capitals, trade routes, and belief systems on a blank floor map.
Overlay a historical map on a current political map, then have students identify three modern countries within each former realm.
