What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students map how the Black Death moved from Asia into Africa and Europe along land and sea routes. They explain how disease changed population, labor, trade, culture, and social relations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can trace major westward routes and connect outbreaks to trade centers and ports. They can use map or source evidence to explain effects such as population loss, higher wages, disrupted trade, or persecution.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think the plague began in Europe or that rats alone spread it. They may assume every region had the same death rate and response. They may name population loss without connecting it to labor shortages, wages, trade disruption, or persecution.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank map labeled Asia, Africa, Europe, Constantinople, Cairo, and Venice. Ask them to draw two routes, then explain one economic and one demographic effect.
