SOCIAL AND CULTURAL GROWTH AND CONFLICT: During the postclassical era, the growth of transregional empires and the use of trade networks influenced religions and spread disease. These cross-cultural interactions also led to conflict and affected demographic development.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how disputes over leadership and authority created religious divisions and political conflict. They compare the Sunni-Shia split, Great Schism, Crusades, and Delhi Sultanate, then explain Sikhism’s development in South Asia.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can identify each group’s claim to authority and support it with historical evidence. They can compare viewpoints and explain political, religious, and social effects without treating conflicts as simple two-sided struggles.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often reduce the Sunni-Shia split to doctrine and miss the succession dispute. They may view the Great Schism and Crusades as simple religious fights while ignoring political power and varied motives. They may assume Delhi rulers forced all Hindus to convert or describe Sikhism as merely a blend of other religions.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: "Choose one case studied. Name the authority dispute, describe two perspectives, and explain one lasting impact."

Ways to Teach It
Pairs sort event, leader, authority claim, and impact cards for the Sunni-Shia split, Great Schism, Crusades, and Delhi Sultanate.
Students write a paragraph answering, "When religious and political leaders disagree, who gains power and who loses it?"
Play a perspective match game using short statements from a crusader, Muslim ruler, Orthodox leader, Catholic pope, Sikh teacher, and Delhi subject.
