RISE OF TRANSREGIONAL TRADE NETWORKS: During the classical and postclassical eras, transregional trade networks emerged and/or expanded. These networks of exchange influenced the economic and political development of states and empires.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how rulers used ports, caravan cities, tolls, and merchant protection to gain revenue and authority. They compare Byzantine and Ottoman growth around the Mediterranean with Ghana and Mali along Trans-Saharan routes.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can use maps and sources to connect trade routes with taxes, armies, government, and territorial growth. They can explain that trade supported expansion without claiming it was the only cause.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat trade as a result of empire rather than a source of revenue and power. They may place medieval Ghana in modern Ghana or assume Ghana and Mali had the same borders. They may also describe Byzantine and Ottoman control as immediate and complete.
How to Assess It
- On an exit ticket, show a small map with Constantinople and Timbuktu. Students choose one city and write three linked sentences about its location, trade revenue, and state growth.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a blank map, colored yarn, and trade-good cards to connect Mediterranean and Trans-Saharan routes, ports, cities, and states.
Have students write a six-link causal chain explaining how taxes on salt, gold, or shipping could help a ruler expand power.
Run a route-control card game where teams earn coins from caravans, pay for guards, and spend revenue to add territory.
Compare an Ottoman customs post with a modern canal toll, then list two ways transit fees can strengthen governments.
