RISE OF TRANSREGIONAL TRADE NETWORKS: During the classical and postclassical eras, transregional trade networks emerged and/or expanded. These networks of exchange influenced the economic and political development of states and empires.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students locate and label the Silk Roads, Indian Ocean routes, Mediterranean routes, and Trans-Saharan routes on a map. They identify which regions each network connected and whether trade moved mainly by land or water.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students accurately place all four networks on an Afro-Eurasian map. They can trace how goods could move between East Asia, Africa, Europe, and South Asia by using connected routes.
Common Misconceptions: Students may draw each network as one fixed road rather than a group of changing routes. They may also confuse the Trans-Saharan routes with Indian Ocean trade or miss connections through North Africa and Southwest Asia.
How to Assess It: Give students a blank Afro-Eurasian map. Have them label all four networks, mark each as land or water, and circle two places where networks connected.

Lesson moves

Ways to Teach It

Lay colored yarn across a large floor map to build each network, then add cards for major regions and trade centers.
Ask students to write which two networks best connected West Africa to Asia and explain the transfer points goods would pass through.
Run a map relay where teams place route, region, and trade-center cards in the correct locations.
Compare the historical networks with a current shipping and rail map, then identify routes that still link similar regions.
