CLASSICAL CIVILIZATIONS: EXPANSION, ACHIEVEMENT, DECLINE: Classical civilizations in Eurasia and Mesoamerica employed a variety of methods to expand and maintain control over vast territories. They developed lasting cultural achievements. Both internal and external forces led to the eventual decline of these empires.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify internal and external pressures that weakened the Han Dynasty, Maya civilization, and Roman Empire. They compare shared and distinct causes, then explain how several pressures worked together over time.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can sort evidence into political, socioeconomic, environmental, and external causes. They can support a comparison with accurate evidence and distinguish long-term weakening from immediate triggers.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often treat each decline as sudden or caused by one invasion. They may assume all three followed the same pattern or that Maya people disappeared completely.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Name a cause shared by two societies and a contrasting cause emphasized in the evidence for a third. Explain how one pressure could worsen another.

Sort cause cards for Han, Maya, and Rome into political, socioeconomic, environmental, and external categories, then build a collapse chain for each.
Write a CER paragraph answering: Which two empires fell for the most similar reasons, and what evidence supports your choice?
