CLASSICAL CIVILIZATIONS: EXPANSION, ACHIEVEMENT, DECLINE: Classical civilizations in Eurasia and Mesoamerica employed a variety of methods to expand and maintain control over vast territories. They developed lasting cultural achievements. Both internal and external forces led to the eventual decline of these empires.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine evidence from Greece, Gupta India, Han China, Maya society, and Rome. They use peace, prosperity, and cultural achievement as criteria to judge each civilization and support their conclusions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students classify specific evidence under the correct criteria and make a defensible judgment. They cite examples such as literature, mathematics, government, architecture, or trade while also recognizing limits and conflicts.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume famous buildings or inventions alone prove an era was successful. They may treat an entire civilization as equally peaceful and prosperous. They may also assume all social groups shared the benefits.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Choose one civilization, decide whether it experienced a Golden Age, and support your claim with two specific facts and one limitation.

Ways to Teach It
Set up five table stations with evidence cards, then have groups sort each card under peace, prosperity, achievement, or limitation.
Discuss this prompt: Can an era deserve the label Golden Age if enslaved people, women, or conquered groups did not prosper?
Play an evidence challenge where teams identify the civilization and criterion shown by each achievement, trade record, conflict, or social condition.
Show a modern headline using the phrase golden age, then have students test the claim using the same three historical criteria.
