DEVELOPMENT OF CIVILIZATION: The development of agriculture enabled the rise of the first civilizations, located primarily along river valleys; these complex societies were influenced by geographic conditions, and shared a number of defining political, social, and economic characteristics.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine artifacts, maps, buildings, and written records from Mesopotamia, Shang China, and the Indus Valley. They use evidence to compare social organization, government, belief systems, technology, and lasting contributions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can identify similarities and differences among the three civilizations and support each claim with specific evidence. They can explain what an artifact or record reveals about how a society worked.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat all river valley civilizations as identical or assume they existed at the same time. They may mistake an unsupported guess about an artifact for evidence. They may also assume limited written evidence means the Indus Valley lacked government or religion.
How to Assess It
- Give students one artifact image from each civilization. Ask them to make one comparison and support it with details from two images.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups artifact cards to sort by civilization, then label what each item suggests about work, belief, government, technology, or social rank.
Ask students to write which civilization is hardest to understand from surviving evidence and defend their answer with two examples.
Run a clue-card relay where teams match evidence to Mesopotamia, Shang China, or the Indus Valley and explain each choice.
Have students compare ancient drainage, writing, or bronze work with a modern system and identify one problem each technology addressed.
