FOREIGN POLICY: The period after World War II has been characterized by an ideological and political struggle, first between the United States and communism during the Cold War, then between the United States and forces of instability in the Middle East. Increased economic interdependence and competition, as well as environmental concerns, are challenges faced by the United States.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students trace how goods, money, jobs, and business decisions cross national borders. They explain how trade and multinational companies affect workers, consumers, and businesses in the United States and New York.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can map a product’s supply chain and identify how countries depend on one another. They can use evidence to explain one benefit, one cost, and one competitive pressure for New York workers or businesses.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think products are made entirely in the country named on the brand label. They may also assume multinational companies belong to no country, or that lower prices always mean workers benefit.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A New York clothing company designs shirts in Albany, buys cotton from India, and sews them in Vietnam. Name two examples of interdependence and explain one likely effect on a New York worker or consumer.
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Give groups five product labels and a world map; students place pins for production countries and connect each product to New York with yarn.
Ask students to write: Does buying the lowest-priced phone help or hurt New York workers, and what evidence supports your view?
Run a supply-chain shock game using country cards; remove one supplier each round, then have teams predict changes in prices and jobs.
Students compare two New York job postings from different industries and identify which skills, suppliers, or markets connect each job globally.
