FOREIGN POLICY: The period after World War II has been characterized by an ideological and political struggle, first between the United States and communism during the Cold War, then between the United States and forces of instability in the Middle East. Increased economic interdependence and competition, as well as environmental concerns, are challenges faced by the United States.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students explain containment and identify economic, diplomatic, and military actions used to carry it out. They compare how the policy shaped four major Cold War events.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can explain why the Marshall Plan, Korean War, Cuban missile crisis, and Vietnam War fit containment. They use evidence to compare methods, goals, and outcomes.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think containment aimed to remove communism everywhere rather than stop its spread. They may view the Marshall Plan as simple charity or assume every military action achieved its goal.
How to Assess It: Give an exit ticket: Choose two Cold War events, name the U.S. action in each, and explain how each action supported containment.

Ways to Teach It

Give pairs event cards and a world map; students place each event, label the U.S. action, and connect it to containment.
Ask students to write: Which better carried out containment, the Marshall Plan or the Vietnam War, and what evidence supports your claim?
Run a policy card game where teams match Cold War scenarios with economic aid, diplomacy, military force, or no action.
Examine a 1962 civil defense poster and have students explain how Cold War foreign policy affected daily life at home.
