WORLD WAR I AND THE ROARING TWENTIES: Various diplomatic, economic, and ideological factors contributed to the United States decision to enter World War I. Involvement in the war significantly altered the lives of Americans. Postwar America was characterized by economic prosperity, technological innovations, and changes in the workplace.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students explain how machine guns, chemical weapons, aircraft, and trenches affected battlefield decisions. They connect stronger defensive weapons and repeated attacks with high casualty totals.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can trace a clear cause and effect chain from a weapon or tactic to a strategic response and its human cost. They use maps, images, or firsthand accounts as evidence.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think trenches were weapons rather than defensive systems. They may assume aircraft controlled battles as they did later, or that chemical weapons caused most wartime deaths.
How to Assess It: Give students one image of a trench and machine gun position. Ask them to explain why an attacking army would struggle and predict the effect on casualties.

Use yarn and desk maps to model trench lines, machine gun range, and aircraft scouting, then revise an attack plan after each constraint.
Read two soldier diary excerpts and answer: Which technology shaped each soldier’s choices, and what evidence shows its effect?
Play a card sort matching machine guns, gas, aircraft, and trenches with tactical responses and likely effects on casualties.
Compare a World War I gas mask with modern protective gear, then explain how a threat can force new equipment and procedures.
