What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students compare the goals, membership, and tactics of major labor unions. They explain how strikes, boycotts, and collective bargaining shaped events such as Haymarket, Pullman, and the garment workers’ strike.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can match each union to its goals, members, and methods using evidence. They can explain why a labor action succeeded or failed and how employers, government, and the public responded.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat all unions as one organization or assume every strike succeeded. They may confuse Haymarket with a union-led bombing or overlook government and employer actions during labor conflicts.
How to Assess It: Give students one source about Pullman and one about the garment workers’ strike. Ask them to identify a tactic and explain why its outcome differed.

Ways to Teach It

Give groups union profile cards and have them build a comparison chart of members, goals, tactics, and outcomes.
Ask students to write which labor tactic was most effective, using evidence from two labor events.
Run a matching relay with cards for unions, leaders, worker groups, tactics, and labor events.
Have students compare a historical union demand with a current workplace policy on hours, safety, wages, or benefits.
