A CHANGING SOCIETY: Industrialization and immigration contributed to the urbanization of America. Problems resulting from these changes sparked the Progressive movement and increased calls for reform.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students trace how factory growth and crowded cities shaped immigration debates, unsafe work, and machine politics. They examine laws, photographs, testimony, and political cartoons. They explain causes, effects, and competing viewpoints with evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can connect a specific condition, such as sweatshop work, to a response, such as labor reform. They can compare the Chinese Exclusion Act, Gentlemen’s Agreement, and 1920s quota laws. They can explain how political machines traded services and jobs for votes while enabling corruption.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat all immigrants as one group or confuse which laws targeted Chinese, Japanese, and other immigrants. They may assume factories quickly ended child labor or that sweatshop workers had safe, regulated jobs. They may describe political machines as only corrupt, missing why poor and immigrant voters sometimes supported them.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Choose the Chinese Exclusion Act, child labor, or Tammany Hall. In three sentences, identify a cause, an effect, and one piece of evidence.

Ways to Teach It
At stations, students sort law excerpts, factory photographs, and political cartoons into immigration, labor, or political machine files, then justify each placement.
Write a response to: Why might an immigrant oppose a political machine yet still seek its help?
Play a cause-and-effect card match using urban growth, nativism, exclusion laws, sweatshops, child labor, patronage, and corruption.
Compare a local news report on migrant workers or city patronage with a historical source, noting one similarity and one difference.
