A CHANGING SOCIETY: Industrialization and immigration contributed to the urbanization of America. Problems resulting from these changes sparked the Progressive movement and increased calls for reform.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain why New York cities grew during industrialization, using evidence about jobs, immigration, transportation, and technology. They connect crowded, diverse neighborhoods to changes in work, housing, health, and culture.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can read maps, population data, photographs, and short accounts to identify causes and effects of urban growth. They can support a claim with specific evidence and explain how experiences differed by neighborhood or social group.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume city growth improved life equally for everyone or that all immigrants shared the same experiences. They may confuse population growth with population density or overlook how streetcars, elevators, bridges, and factories changed where people lived and worked.
How to Assess It
- Give students a population graph and tenement photograph from New York City. Ask them to name one cause of growth and explain two effects using evidence from both sources.
