What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how Sojourner Truth, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Matilda Joslyn Gage, and Susan B. Anthony worked to expand women’s rights. They connect abolition and temperance work to demands for property rights, education, fair wages, voting rights, and political equality.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students use primary-source evidence to explain the grievances and demands presented at Seneca Falls. They describe specific contributions of key reformers and explain why the convention and Declaration of Sentiments marked a turning point.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think the Seneca Falls Convention immediately gave women voting rights or that all reformers supported the same goals and methods. They may also overlook how race, abolition, temperance, and women’s rights shaped reformers’ experiences and priorities.
How to Assess It
- Give students one excerpt from the Declaration of Sentiments. Ask them to identify the grievance, name the right being sought, and explain its historical significance in three sentences.
