WESTWARD EXPANSION: Driven by political and economic motives, the United States expanded its physical boundaries to the Pacific Ocean between 1800 and 1860. This settlement displaced Native Americans as the frontier was pushed westward.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify how expansion created jobs, transportation, land access, and voting power for some groups. They also explain displacement, exclusion, violence, and cultural loss using evidence from canals, removal policies, court cases, wars, and migration.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can compare how one event affected at least two groups differently. They support their comparison with accurate details about groups such as Irish workers, white male voters, Cherokee people, Oneidas, women, or African Americans.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume western land was empty, all settlers benefited equally, or Native Americans accepted removal without resistance. They may also treat Jacksonian voting gains as universal, overlooking the continued exclusion of women, African Americans, and Native Americans.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “Choose one expansion event. Explain who gained, who was harmed, and give one accurate fact supporting each claim.”

Use a floor map to trace the Erie Canal and removal routes, then place benefit and harm cards beside affected groups.
Discuss: Did Jacksonian democracy expand democracy if white men gained votes while women, African Americans, and Native people remained excluded?
Sort event cards for Cherokee courts, Seminole resistance, and Oneida land loss by strategy, government action, and result.
Compare the Erie Canal with a local highway project, listing who gained access or jobs and who faced displacement.
